On the recommendation of a faculty or board of studies
assessment committee, the University Medal Committee may
award a University Medal to a student in an undergraduate
course who has shown highly distinguished merit and, where
Honours are awarded, has performed at a level significantly
above the minimum required for honours Class 1. If there
are specialisations within a course which involve sufficiently
distinct areas of study, the Academic Board on the recommendation
of the appropriate faculty or board of studies may approve
that a Medal be awarded for each such specialisation. The
University Medal Committee will take into account the whole
academic record of the student in the course.
As the award of a Medal indicates outstanding academic
performance, in the case of an honours degree significantly
above the minimum requirements for Honours Class 1, it is
expected that only in exceptional circumstances would there
be more than one Medal for a particular specialisation.
If the Committee is of a mind not to award a Medal which
has been recommended by a faculty or board assessment committee
it shall discuss the matter with the appropriate presiding
member and head of school before making a final decision.
The award of the University Medal is to be determined
twice in each year by the University Medal Committee following
the session 1 and session 2 series of Assessment Committee
Meetings.
The University Medal Committee shall meet at least once
a year to review Medal Policy in addition to determining
Medal winners.
